Elysia keeps her curse to herself as much as possible. She is aware of the social impact it will trigger if news were to spread around, so she often interacts with people while avoiding eye contact and is seldom or never seen without her glasses.
She is often found in the library gathering more information about entities and curses related to them, followed by high, airy places like rooftops and garden rest stops where she gathers materials to experiment on. Elysia is well aware of the labyrinth and hopes for an opportunity to explore it someday (although she will probably just tag along and be a burden because using her powers for the kill will trigger the uniform pin).History:
Elysia’s father is a well known fortune teller with the ability to peer into the future through direct eye contact with his customers. A powerful entity disguised as a human, was unhappy with his forecast and cursed his family line. Even with his powers, father could not see into his own future just like how doctors can never cure their own illness. However, he gained insight to the twist of events via mother and became determined to sustain the family for as long as possible while finding a remedy for the curse.Father figured the curse is the exact opposite of his gift, the ‘evil eye’. Instead of a future vision forecast through eye contact, anyone who makes direct eye contact with Elysia is cursed with misfortune, and prolonged eye contact for more than 5 seconds will result in an immediate death (Often with the most ridiculous cause). Father knows the simple temporary solution - a pair of glasses. Just like his own powers, any form of non-living matter that intercepts the direct eye contact will block out the ability and it’s effects, other than air.
Bringing up Elysia is a challenge, especially when mother is a normal human. Father has warned mother about daughter’s threat, which made them both equally determined to overcome all odds and bring her up, educate her, instill all the positive morals like every other (not fucked up) parent would. Equipped with glasses, Elysia’s early years was sheltered and always kept under their close parental guidance. Father stopped providing fortune telling services to dedicate his time for her. Things went quite smoothly until Elysia became old enough for education and most importantly, her own pair of glasses.Elysia soon learned about her curse and even experimented with some pests in the house. (She knows the spider on the table is returning her gaze when nicely shelved books started collapsing on it.) It wasn’t long before she experienced the side effects of the spell - Blurred vision, temporary blindness and even loss of consciousness depending on the severity of her experiments. (Yes, she fainted taking out a spider). One would normally go astray with such destructive powers, but after knowing about all the hardship her parents went through to bring her up with love, care and hope, she became determined to live on, not entirely fond of falling into comas herself. There is lot more to learn about what she can do with this twisted potential, and maybe one day, she might even find a way to lift her curse.
Miscellaneous:
Father gained his power by forming a pact with an entity that uses time magic arcana (Divination). Father specialise in telepathy, which together grants him the ability to connect with his customers thoughts and see future events. Although Elysia has inherited Telepathy from her father, her current capability is better described as Empathy.
At this point, she is only able to assess the mood/feelings of people around her through reading their thought patterns. She is unable to read or communicate with other people through their mind.
As magicians cannot use arcane magic unless contracted to an entity, the curse works in a way that it triggers Elysia to bring misfortune through direct eye contact via corporeal means of magic. For example, the above mentioned experience of books falling onto the spider is caused by telekinesis. The curse will simply invoke the route with least efforts to trigger an unfortunate event, and it is always involuntary to Elysia.
